Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum, In A Dish…

…how many pieces do you wish?

We attended an out-of-state Family Reunion this past weekend.   The previous one had been a full five years before.  Although my children hadn’t seen their cousins in all that time, it was as if no time had passed.  Almost immediately, they broke into a game of tag.  But first, they needed to decide who was “It”.  When I heard one of the girls singing this rhyme and counting the hands laid out on the table, I remembered that we used to do this exact same rhyme in my youth.  I hadn’t thought of it since then, but the memories came flooding back.


“Bubble gum, bubble gum, in a dish.  How many pieces do you wish?”


“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12″

And and hand is removed from the table.

And so it continues.

Until there are only two left.

And finally, one is declared “It”. 

There isn’t even enough time to take a picture before they run off to play the next game.

    Oh…I remember that one. I have to start using that with my own children so they too can pass it down! Here’s another that I remember. “My mother and your mother were hanging up clothes. My mother socked your mother, right in the nose. What color was the blood?” Then we chose a color, spelled it out, and whomever we landed on was “it”. :-)

    I remember 2 that we always did together but I don’t know how to spell them right. Eeny Meeny Mighty Mo, catch a tiger by the toe, if he hollers make him pay, fifty dollars every day. My Mother told me to pick the very best one but I was naughty and picked this one!

    Love the Bubble Gum, brought back Memories.

    Michele – We did the Eeny Meeny Tiger one, but it was a little different. If he hollered, we let him go…we didn’t pay him. :-)

    Kelly – I remember that one, too! Kinda sick, isn’ it? Then again, there were some other sick ones.

    Do you remember the hand slapping “Miss Suzy” songs?

    I remember a couple more from my childhood. I grew up in a large subdivision and all of us kids were constantly playing games that required choosing “it’.

    “Engine Engine Number Nine going down the Chicago line. If the train rolls off the track, do you want your money back? Yes, no maybe so? No so Maybe so.”
    Child chooses yes or no…
    “Y-E-S spells yes and you are it.”
